Any student in grade 6-12 for the upcoming school year can join the team. Students do not have to race to be a part of the team.
Our team does not cut riders. ALL athletes can participate at the same level, there are no try-outs.
Riders work with their coaches to determine their goals and aims for the season, so it is a fun and fulfilling experience for all.

Yes, mountain biking is inherently a risky sport. However, risk management principles guide every NICA league activity from team training to league races. Background checks and CDC heads up concussion certifications are required before adults can work with NICA youth.
Finally we have level 2/3 coaches that are required to hold CPR/first aid certifications.

The best thing you can do is to support your rider! Getting them to practice on time, or finding them a ride, encouraging them with goals, and being a positive cheerleader for them.
If a parent would like to ride with the team, we would love that! Make sure that you register with NICA and become a level 1 coach.
During the race season we will need help from our parents. Be on the lookout for volunteer opportunities.

NICA - National Interscholastic Cycling Association. This is the national level. There are many resources for the teams.
IICL - Idaho Interscholastic Cycling League. This is our local league. All race information will be found here.
Pit Zone ( Online)- is the website where parents & students complete NICA and Idaho League registrations, waivers, and register for races, camps, etc. It is also the website where coaches register, request a background check and complete online trainings to qualify as a Level 1, 2, or 3 coach.
Pit Zone (at the races)- also describes the physical location at races where each team sets up team canopies. Our team uses this space to have a bike mechanic station, bike trainers, team lunch, etc. Student-athletes should always “check in” at our Team’s Pit Zone when they arrive at a race venue and “check out” when they leave the venue. It is the perfect place for racers to find a coach or teammates, store a little bit of stuff during their race, and to relax after races. This is also a good place for parents and friends to gather with the team but be aware that priority for the space is for racers who are preparing or recovering from racing
TeamSnap - TeamSnap is a subscription service our team uses to communicate with our team. Each student, parent, and coach will need an invite from our Team Director to set up an account in TeamSnap so they can see our schedule, roster, and receive emails, texts, etc.
GRiT (Girls Riding Together) - is an initiative within NICA that fosters a supportive and welcoming community for female cyclists in the youth mountain biking scene.
Freshman - 9th grade riders
Junior Varsity 2 (JV2) - 10-12th graders assigned by IICL staff using the Category Placement Table (CPT) from the previous season. JV2 races 2 laps.
Junior Varsity 1 (JV1) - 9-12th graders assigned by IICL staff using the Category Placement Table (CPT) from the previous season. JV1 races 2 laps.
Varsity - 9-12th graders assigned by IICL staff using the Category Placement Table (CPT) from the previous season. Riders can elect whether to move up to varsity if selected. Varsity races 3 laps.
Party Lap - This is a lap at races that anyone can sign up for. It allows riders to participate in race days without officially racing. Not every race has a party lap, make sure you check the race fliers.
Staging - This is how the league organizes the racers. The staging lineup comes out a day before the race. It is based on the placement from each race. This information is found in Pit Zone.
Feed Zone - At a race the high school students race 2 -3 laps. In between each lap there are able to get a new water bottle. The area that it can be done is referred to “Feed Zone”
Time Trial - This is done at the first race of every season. Each racer is placed in a category based on grade and gender. They start one at a time. This will determine when they start at the next race. All teams are required to attend this race.
Mass Start- After the time trial race, all other races will have a mass start. Meaning each category will start at the same time. They line up students in rows of 5.
Friendship/Sportsman Basket - This is a team tradition. Families volunteer to put a basket together for every race. We pick a different team each race and give them the basket. It is a small way that reach out to other teams.
